Hello My Name Is… (Week 5) – Samson’s Mother
This week we carried on our look at Samson’s Mother as she dealt with the exciting news of hearing from God that she was going to have a baby. We were meditating on this verse:
“Then the woman went to her husband and told him, “A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God, very awesome. I didn’t ask him where he came from, and he didn’t tell me his name.” Judges 13:6
Feeling Her Excitement
This week we spoke about how you can feel Samson’s mother’s excitement as she ran off from this interaction with the angel of God straight to her husband. She wanted to share this news with him as soon as possible, but in her quick explanation she realises she forgot to ask some vital questions!! I can almost hear the hurried talking and her husband having to ask twice what she was going on about! But this is the result of what happens when God steps into our lives. You can feel the excitement, its contagious. When God really truly speaks to you it sets your heart on fire and it becomes contagious.
When You Know Know
Despite realising that she hadn’t asked the angel of the Lord where he came from or what his name was, it seemed that Samson’s Mother knew who he was anyway. We’re not sure why or how she knew, but she did. And we chatted about this in the Facebook Community about how we “know know”, and a lot of us said we were still learning to hear from God. That we often require confirmation from another place that it was God before we are sure. Perhaps this is what Samson’s Mother is seeking here – looking to her husband for confirmation that he thinks it was from God too.
Husbands Can Help Us Know
Although we can see that she had her own opinion on what had happened and who she thought had spoken to her, she wanted to share it with her husband. We discussed how, as we are close to our husbands, they can speak truthfully to us and will help us to know whether something was from God. They can be a real strength when they provide that authority in situations, but they might also lead us to doubt what we know God has spoken. This is something we need to prayerfully consider, especially if you husband is not a Christian.
After this week looking at Samson’s Mother going to her husband for confirmation, we see what happens when God provides confirmation to them as a couple:
“God listened to Manoah. God’s angel came again to the woman. She was sitting in the field; her husband Manoah wasn’t there with her. She jumped to her feet and ran and told her husband: “He’s back! The man who came to me that day!” Judges 13:9-10
I am looking forward to kicking off discussion for the week over in the Facebook Community in our Live discussion at 9pm on Monday. Please do join me, with your thoughts on this week and initial observations of the verse.
