Hello My Name Is… (week 6) – Samson’s Mother

Hello!!!  And welcome to week 6, past the halfway point, of our “Hello My Name Is” series.  We have continued looking at the story of Samson’s Mother this week, as its a really interesting one, and we see the return of the Angel of God this week too, after her husband has prayed to speak to Him.

“God listened to Manoah. God’s angel came again to the woman. She was sitting in the field; her husband Manoah wasn’t there with her. She jumped to her feet and ran and told her husband: “He’s back! The man who came to me that day!” Judges 13:9-10

Unexpected Answers

The first thing that jumped straight out at me from this verse was that God sent another message to her instead of him.  That he was the one who asked the question, the one that God listened to and yet God doesn’t send the angel straight to him.  He includes her in this, and shows that He values her.  That He values what this will do to their relationship to strengthen it if they’re both included.  It is entirely UNEXPECTED but that is often the way God does things – in His own way that makes no sense to us!  It often isn’t the simplest or easiest way to deal with things, but it often is the most loving or the way that includes the most people in seeing a miracle happen. God is the God of the unexpected.

Loving Reactions

I love the way that Samson’s Mother reacts to the second appearance of the angel – in the same way as the first time, she runs in excitement to tell her husband and to try to include him!  What a loving way to act.  She doesn’t want to keep it to herself or wait to tell him, she wants him to be able to understand what God has asked of them in the same way she does.  Do we always react that way, or do we sometimes want to keep God and his answers and words all to ourselves?

God will confirm His ways

I always remember being told “Don’t test God” and “Don’t put God to the test”.  I guess this has stuck with me, as I am there thinking that Manoah should have had more faith.  But what should have stuck with me is don’t test WHO God is and His character – God is unchanging and we know that.  But asking for confirmation on WHAT God wants of us or WHERE we should be going or WHEN we should do it, is something God understands and wants to do.  You see, asking that question shows something different in our hearts – it shows that we WANT to go that way, we just want to check it is GODS WAY first.  When you ask for God to reveal who He is to you, that is because you don’t really believe, and seeing that won’t help you!  But when you ask for confirmation of his calling, that is showing that we do believe and want to do it right.  Here we see God honouring Manoah’s prayer because it is one of obedience rather than doubting.

God recognises the faithful

When I asked in the Facebook community how we all thought Samson’s mother would feel about this second appearance, lots of you said excited and I think she would have been honoured to see the angel again.  I have been thinking over and over about how she doesn’t NEED that second visit, as she had faith the first time, but that she is rewarded with it because of her faith.  It’s like a gift from God to her, to allow her to share that experience again with her husband.  And it reminded me that God recognises and rewards the faithful in His own ways.

Next Week

Its the final week where we are looking at the story of Samson’s Mother, so we’ll be finished meditating on this verse:

“But his wife answered, “If the LORD had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.” Judges 13:23

I hope you’ll join me for a lively Facebook live discussion at 9pm tomorrow night, where I will be doing a whistle stop tour of the story from verses 10 through to 23 so you know the context behind this one!!  I also have some exciting news about our first Mummy Meditations Champion (and if you want to apply do check out the details here – I am looking for an Instagram pro to help with our Instagram account)
